AT&T Contribution Sending Johnstown Kids to Camp Next Year

Posted on September 22, 2014

Johnstown, PA (Sept. 22, 2014) – A $10,000 contribution from AT&T will make summer camp possible for more than 100 at-risk students at The Learning Lamp’s free Outreach program next year. Community Foundation for the Alleghenies facilitated the connection between the nonprofit and AT&T, which made the contribution possible.

“This generous gift enables The Learning Lamp to offer many kids a summer experience they have never known before,” said Jenn Rager, The Learning Lamp’s outreach coordinator. “We are thrilled to work with AT&T to provide educational activities, field trips and more to kids who often never get to leave the city.”

The Outreach program provides two weeks of free summer camps at each of its three locations in Johnstown. This past summer, The Learning Lamp sent campers on field trips to Outdoor Odyssey Adventure Camp, Living Treasures Zoo and Valewood Farms. The camps also offered STEM-focused activities for kids in grades K-8, as well as free meals and a safe place to interact with peers.

In addition to its summer camp offerings, The Learning Lamp’s Outreach program provides free after school programming from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday in Moxham, Oakhurst and Prospect throughout the school year. Students receive homework help, a nutritious meal and character-building activities.

“At AT&T, education has been our priority for more than a century, which is why we are working with organizations like The Learning Lamp and the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies to inspire more students to prepare for success in school, on the job and in life,” said J. Michael Schweder, president, AT&T Mid-Atlantic. “The camps will provide students from the Greater Johnstown area with educational experiences that are important to their future success.”
