Free MADD Workshops Highlight Parents’ Power to Prevent Underage Drinking

Posted on October 31, 2014

Johnstown, PA (Oct. 31, 2014) – Have you talked to your kids about the dangers of drugs and alcohol today? If not, why not?  Children of parents who talk to their teens regularly about drugs are 50 percent less likely to use drugs than those who don’t, according to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence—yet, only a quarter of teens report having these conversations.

Parental influence is proven to be one of the most important factors in helping keep teens safe. That’s why The Learning Lamp now offers Power of Parents, a community-based parent education workshop from MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving®) and the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB).

“A 2012 GfK Roper Youth Report showed that 74 percent of kids ages 8-17 said their parents are the leading influence on their decisions about drinking,” said Adam Rodkey, a prevention specialist at The Learning Lamp and a certified Power of Parents facilitator.

Power of Parents workshops and parent handbooks are available FREE to schools, businesses and other community organizations that are willing to host the 30-minute program for groups of 20 to 30 people.

At rates higher than state and national averages, there is no disputing that alcohol is the most prevalently used drug among youth in Cambria County. By the time children reach their senior year in high school, three of four have experimented with alcohol and 42 percent admit to drinking regularly, according to results from the 2013 PA Youth Survey. But the largest jump in experimentation actually occurs much earlier between 6th and 8th grades when experimentation with alcohol nearly triples.

Power of Parents is just one of The Learning Lamp’s drug, alcohol, violence and youth problem gambling prevention offerings. For more information or to schedule a Power of Parents workshop, call Adam at 814-262-0732 or visit www.thelearninglamp.org.
