Giant Map of Pacific Ocean Travels to Area Schools

Posted on October 14, 2014

Johnstown, PA (Oct. 14, 2014) – Area students will get their feet wet when The Learning Lamp brings the National Geographic’s Giant Map of the Pacific Ocean to local schools. The enormous map, which measures 35’ by 26’, visits schools Nov. 10-21, 2014. Students will use the map as the basis for interactive games and activities that explore what’s beneath the surface of the world’s largest ocean.

“The Pacific Ocean is a fantastic subject when teaching kids about geography, ecology and history,” said Amanda Peretin, lead instructor of The Learning Lamp To Go program. “This is an ocean that’s home to both the deepest depths – the Mariana Trench – and the highest heights – the Mauna Kea mountain in Hawaii. Kids will be amazed at all the life that exists in the water.”

While younger students learn map-reading skills and the basic ecology of the ocean, older students delve deeper into the history of seafarers’ explorations and the impact of phenomena such as plate tectonics.

A $200 travel stipend is needed to reserve the map. The map curriculum is delivered to students by teachers from The Learning Lamp. A limited number of reservations will be accepted. Schools interested in scheduling a visit should call Amanda at 814262-0732.
