High School Juniors, Seniors Can Earn Cash for College

Posted on May 16, 2016

Johnstown, PA (May 12, 2016) – In its most recent survey of college pricing, the College Board reported the average cost for attending a public college at $24,061, while private institutions averaged $47,831. As college costs continue to rise, 83 percent of Americans say they cannot afford college tuition, according to a recent Edward Jones survey. The Learning Lamp recognizes the value of a college education and is partnering with the Pennsylvania Mountain Service Corps of the AmeriCorps National Service Movement to help lessen the financial burden for incoming high school seniors and soon-to-be-graduates.

We’re is recruiting team members to work with children in Kindergarten through grade 8 in our free summer camp programs in Moxham, Prospect, and Oakhurst from June 6 – August 4. Positions are unpaid, but those who volunteer 300 hours will earn an education award of $1,212.  The award can be used toward college tuition or to repay student loans. Camps run in two-week sessions, with additional volunteer hours for camp prep and follow up in between. Participants gain experience in child care, behavior management, program facilitation and data collection/reporting to add to their resume. Camp themes will focus on STEM/STEAM activities and culminate with a field trip.

“AmeriCorps places thousands of young adults into service positions where they learn valuable work skills, serve their community and earn money for education,” explained Ingrid Kloss, development director at The Learning Lamp. “Many people struggle with going to college because of the cost, but this partnership helps rising seniors and soon-to-be-graduates chip away at the growing costs while building their resumes.”

Applicants must be 17 years old as of June 1, 2016. Prior experience working with children preferred, but not required. If interested, email cover letter and resume to jobs@thelearninglamp.org with “AmeriCorps 300 Hour Position” in the subject line.
