Hospital Provides School Supplies to Kids in Need

Posted on October 2, 2014

Johnstown, PA (Oct. 2, 2014) – As part of its monthly CARING Boxes campaign, Conemaugh Health System provided pencils, notebooks, binders, backpacks and more to children attending The Learning Lamp’s After School Outreach programs in Moxham, Oakhurst and Prospect.

“It was a huge surprise to receive these donations,” said Jenn Rager, outreach program coordinator at The Learning Lamp. “The kids were beyond thrilled.”

The CARING Boxes campaign is one that resonates with Conemaugh’s 4,500 employees. Each month, the hospital collects donations for a specific organization. For the month of August, the initiative focused on providing school supplies to kids in need. Employees were able to drop off donations at several strategically-located points in the region on their ways to work.

“Conemaugh Health System is a big supporter of community volunteerism. The continued success of our CARING Boxes initiative proves that our employees care about it, too,” said Jeannine McMillan, manager of strategic planning at Conemaugh Health System. “It brings us a great sense of pride that we were able to help kids head to school with the supplies they needed to do well.”

The Learning Lamp’s After School Outreach program provides free homework help, a healthy meal, character-enrichment activities and a safe environment Monday through Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. throughout the school year. The program also offers free two-week summer camps at each of its three locations.
