Parent & Child Classes Offer Introduction to School for Little Learners

Posted on September 25, 2014

Johnstown, PA (Sept. 25, 2014) – Fall into fun with The Learning Lamp’s latest lineup of Parent and Child classes. Each series has its own special theme specifically developed for 2-, 3- and 4-year-olds. The classes serve as an introduction to a preschool setting, as well as an opportunity for parents to learn how to be involved with their child’s education.

“The Parent and Child classes have a heavy focus on early literacy. Every series is developed with a book at its core,” said Erica Ponczek, director of child development and early learning at The Learning Lamp. “Developing the foundation for learning to read is critical for success in school.”

The fall series of Parent and Child will take place from October to December. Classes are held on Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Greater Johnstown Career and Technology Center in Room F204. October’s series is $44; November’s and December’s series are both $33. Parents can choose from three whimsical themes:

Daring Ducks

Ever see a duck ride a bike? You will when you join us for this series of classes inspired by the popular children’s book, Duck on a Bike by David Shannon. We’ll use our creativity as we paint, sculpt and craft our own art. Oct. 3, 10, 17 & 24 (4 sessions).

Sleepy Heads

Sometimes, you just aren’t ready to go to bed! We’ll learn the story of one particular young owl who refused to hit the hay when we read I’m NOT Sleepy by Jane Chapman. It’s then on to arts and crafts as we learn all about owls. Nov. 7, 14, & 21 (3 sessions).

Penguin Play!

Who doesn’t love a playful penguin? After reading Five Little Penguins Slipping on the Ice, we’ll make our own penguins out of water bottles and play a game of Penguin Pins! Dec. 5, 12 & 19 (3 sessions).

The Parent and Child curriculum is written and taught by Jenna Leverknight, the preschool teacher for The Learning Lamp’s part-day preschool program in Richland. Parent and Child classes also offer a great opportunity for families to check out the preschool classroom and even observe a class.
