Skills Sessions Keep Kids’ Brains Active During Summer

Posted on June 20, 2014

Johnstown, PA (June 20, 2014) –Though kids may feel the urge to throw out their books this summer and avoid any so-called “classes,” research shows that children generally lose one to two months of math and reading skills during summer vacation, according to the Center for Summer Learning at Johns Hopkins University.

“After a long summer vacation, kids come back to school in the fall struggling to remember what they learned the previous year,” said Kristi Emerick, Assistant Director of Tutoring at The Learning Lamp. “Teachers generally have to spend three to four weeks re-teaching students these skills to get them back on track.

To help students maintain the skills they learned during the school year, The Learning Lamp is offering Summer Skills Sessions for students entering grades 2 to 5. During the sessions, a certified teacher leads small groups of five or less in a review of math and reading concepts. The skills sessions also help prepare students for the coming school year and provide a more flexible and fun environment than a standard classroom.

The sessions are available for only $64 per series, which includes four 2-hour sessions over the course of two weeks. That breaks down to only $8 an hour.

July Series

Math: July 7, 9, 14 & 16

Reading: July 8, 20, 15 & 17

August Series
