Upcoming Kids’ Art Classes Focus on Original Selfies, 3-D Designs

Johnstown, PA (Mar. 31, 2014) – It’s time for kids to get creative during The Learning Lamp’s spring series of Saturday art classes. This season, the two series of classes will provide kids an outlet to create their very own self-portraits and 3-D designs.

“During the classes, kids will make art and learn about art history at the same time,” said Brittni McKolosky, certified art teacher at The Learning Lamp. “We’ll study techniques used by Picasso, Matisse, Van Gogh and more. It’s a high brow subject taught in a kid-friendly, hands-on way.”

All of the art classes will be held at The Learning Lamp art studio, located at its headquarters at 2025 Bedford St. in Stonycreek Township. Parents can choose from two different art series, which offer three classes each. Registration is available now for the following:

• The Original Selfie – Saturdays, Apr. 5, 12 & 19, 2014

Before the advent of the cell phone, artists had to rely on things like paint and charcoal to make “selfies.” We’ll learn all about it as kids create their own self-portraits inspired by Munch’s “The Scream.” We’ll then take on Picasso’s multi-dimensional style of portraiture and make our own selfie masterpieces using methods by Matisse.

• Dimensional Designs – Saturdays, May 3, 10 & 17, 2014

Artists want art that leaps off the page. We’ll use techniques to create just that as we make our own African paper masks and learn the basics of 2– and 3–dimensional design. Gathering inspiration from artist Frank Stella, we’ll design 3-D relief sculptures. Then it’s on to Van Gogh as we explore the element of texture in art.

Tuition is $25 per series for kids in preschool through third grade. Tuition for grades four and up is $38 per series. Tuition covers the cost of supplies and all three classes in a series.
