The Learning Lamp offers one-on-one and small group tutoring that is affordable for all families. Rates are determined on a sliding scale based on the National School Lunch Program. K-12 Students receive high-quality instruction conducted by PA certified teachers. Tutoring sessions are designed to reinforce lessons taught during the school day and help students master skills. Individualized instruction is based on each student’s needs and school district curriculum.
Our education director carefully matches students and tutors based on personality, interests, location of tutoring and schedule. The Learning Lamp strives to meet the needs of parents and children offering tutoring on a mobile basis in schools, libraries, community centers and churches across the region.
One-on-one and small group tutoring for students who are experiencing difficulty in school can be conducted at our learning center or another convenient location. Tutoring fees are based on each family’s financial means. Our approach is to work with schools and teachers, using teacher input, current classroom work, homework assignments and report card grades as our guide. We believe students benefit most when supplemental instruction reinforces lessons taught during the school day. Services are currently available in Cambria, Somerset, Bedford, Blair, Indiana and Westmoreland Counties. (Click here for enrollment forms)
Concerned about the loss of ClassroomPlus funding? The Learning Lamp is picking up where Classroom Plus left off by offering full or partial assistance to any child who is eligible for the National School Lunch Program. Through our scholarship program, eligible students qualify for tutoring at a rate of $12 per session or less if their family is experiencing great financial hardship.

The Learning Lamp’s Homework Help program sends work-study students into established after school programs around the region, providing children with the kind of one-on-one attention that is simply not possible at most latchkey programs. Tutors focus on assisting children with homework. This program is free to all students. Our first Homework Help partner is KidStop at Westmont Hilltop Elementary. We hope to expand to a second after school location this fall.
The Learning Lamp works closely with area school districts to offer educational support for students when they are not in school. The Learning Lamp is a partner in Greater Johnstown School District’s After School Live, an after school program available to 75 at-risk high school students. We currently offer supplemental math classes for students who are experiencing difficulty in meeting state standards. For districts interested in similar services, classes can be offered after school and during summer break.
