Annual Piggy Bank Fundraiser Supports Free After School Program

Posted on July 17, 2019

Johnstown, PA (July 10, 2019) – If you spot a hand-painted piggy bank like this around Johnstown, please dig out some pocket change to feed it. The proceeds will help The Learning Lamp serve dinner and provide academic support to local children attending free after school programs in low-income neighborhoods. The adorable banks were painted by the kids and will be on display through August 30, 2019.

Study after study shows that students who participate in after school programs attend school more regularly, have more positive attitudes toward school, are more physically active and receive better grades. Held in the Johnstown neighborhoods of Moxham, Oakhurst and Coopersdale, The Learning Lamp’s After School Outreach Program provides free homework help, a nutritious meal and a safe, positive environment for children in grades K to 7 up to four days each week. Contributions to the Annual Piggy Bank Campaign support both school year and summer programming at those sites.

“This year, we’re hoping to raise more money than ever before,” said Kerri Belardi, The Learning Lamp’s Director of Communications. “We are excited to have the support of many local businesses who have graciously adopted a piggy bank to host at their locations for the next eight weeks; and for all individuals who drop a coin or two into our banks to support our After School Outreach Program. The change they donate may end up changing a child’s life.”

The Learning Lamp distributed piggy banks to the following businesses in our region: Main Moon Chinese Restaurant, Cliptations, The Haven, Em’s Sub Shop on Goucher Street, Martella’s Pharmacy, Meatballs, The Morning Grind Coffee House, The Johnstown Inn, Szechuan East, Hoss’s Steak & Sea House on Theater Drive, Big Dogs Grill, Vision Works at Richland Town Center, Fox’s Pizza Richland, Clark’s Corner Store, Quaker Steak and Lube, Flood City Café, It’s Tantilizing, Young Heart Books and Toys, Eat’n Park Westmont, Santos Pizza, West Hills Beer and Soda, The Outhouse, The Vault Salon.
