Giant Map of Europe Headed to Area Schools

Posted on October 10, 2016

Map_EuropeJohnstown, PA (October 10, 2016) – From the snow and frigid temperatures of Finland to the sun and warmth of Cyprus, the continent of Europe provides a study of extremes. Through its partnership with National Geographic, The Learning Lamp will bring the Giant Map of Europe to area schools. Students get the chance to learn about the geography and history of the earth’s second smallest continent. The 26’ x 26’ map visits schools in Bedford, Cambria and Somerset Counties Nov. 7 through Nov. 18, 2016.

“Throughout history, Europeans have been in the forefront of intellectual, social and economic undertakings,” said Amanda Peretin, The Learning Lamp To Go coordinator. “The continent’s physical diversity, as well as its important history, lends itself to teaching students an impactful geography lesson.”

Led by an instructor, students will explore all corners of Europe as they learn about its history and geography through fun, feet- and hands-on activities. Students will venture into the freezing Barents Sea then head south to learn more about the physical makeup of this diverse continent. Younger students will develop teamwork and map-reading skills while older students dive into more economic, political and historical topics. This multidisciplinary curriculum has something for students of any age group, although it is most appropriate for grades K-8.

The Learning Lamp requests a $300 travel stipend to reserve a visit with a visit with the map and a teacher to deliver lessons to students. School districts outside of a 30-mile radius of Johnstown may be subject to an additional mileage fee. A limited number of reservations will be accepted. Schools interested in scheduling a tour should call Amanda at 814-262-0732 extension 246.
