“Lights On” Events Promote Importance of After School Programs

Posted on October 19, 2015

Johnstown, PA (Oct. 19, 2015) – It’s time to shine a light on the need for after school programs in the region! The Learning Lamp will take part in the Afterschool Alliance’s “Lights On Afterschool” celebration on Thursday, Oct. 22 at all of its after school sites.

lightson3Nationwide, for each child currently participating in an after school program, two more are still waiting to get in. Students enrolled in The Learning Lamp’s after school programs will color light bulb cut-outs and string them together in an effort to illuminate the positive impact of after school programs for the 10.2 million kids who rely on them every day—and shine a light on the 19.4 million more who are still waiting for a spot. Light refreshments will be served as parents stop in to pick up their child at the end of the day. A formal Open House is scheduled from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Richland After School Program in the Music Room of Richland Elementary School at 321 Schoolhouse Road in Richland Township.

“We’re standing with the Afterschool Alliance to demonstrate to our community how important after school programs are in children’s lives,” said Leah Spangler, chief executive officer at The Learning Lamp. “With these programs, we’re not only providing child care for families, we provide homework help, educationally-focused activities, character-enrichment programming and more. It’s something that’s truly made a difference in the lives of the children we serve.”

The Learning Lamp offers two types of after school care at 13 sites across Cambria and Somerset counties. Nine locations offer care to 523 elementary students at affordable rates, with some income-eligible families receiving tuition assistance. On top of its regular after school programming, The Learning Lamp also offers its Kids’ Day Out program that provides care on Act 80 days, snow days and school holidays such as winter break.

The four remaining sites are part of The Learning Lamp’s free After School Outreach Programs in the Johnstown neighborhoods of Moxham, Oakhurst, Prospect and Coopersdale. Participants receive free homework help, a healthy meal and structured character-building activities in a safe environment Monday through Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. throughout the school year.

“Most of the kids who attend our programs need these safe havens in the after school hours, as the neighborhoods they live in can often be very unstable,” said Breanna Haselrig, The Learning Lamp’s
outreach coordinator. “When the kids step inside our programs, we strive to make them feel protected and cared for and encourage them to become the best they can be personally, as well as academically.”

The Learning Lamp is currently seeking volunteers at its free After School Outreach sites in Moxham, Prospect, Oakhurst and Coopersdale. Call Breanna at 814-262-0732 x239 if you are interested in lending a hand.
