Parent and Child Classes Offer Introduction to School for Little Learners

Posted on February 27, 2017

Johnstown, PA (Feb. 27, 2017) – Spring into fun with The Learning Lamp’s of Parent and Child classes. These interactive classes are the perfect introduction to preschool, and each series has its own special theme specifically developed for 2-, 3- and 4-year-olds.

“The Parent and Child classes have a heavy focus on early literacy. Every series is developed with a book at its core,” said Erica Ponczek, director of child development and early learning at The Learning Lamp. “Establishing the foundation for learning to read is critical for success in school.”

The spring series of Parent and Child will take place from March to May. Classes are held on Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Greater Johnstown Career and Technology Center in Room F204. The March series is $55; For April and May, tuition is $33. Parents can choose from three whimsical themes:

Deep Sea Adventure

What happens when bath time turns into a deep sea adventure? We’ll play peekaboo with a hermit crab and fence with a swordfish as we read Way Down Deep in the Deep Blue Sea by Jan Peck. Afterwards, we’ll make shark headdresses, handprint crabs and construct whales out of paper plates. March 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 (5 sessions).

What Do You Feed a Fussy Flower?

What do you mean a flower won’t flourish by feeding it pizza and ice cream? Join us as we go along on this adorably humorous tale as we read Grow Flower Grow! by Lisa Bruce. We’ll get crafty using soda bottles to paint flowers, plant seeds and make handprint flowers. April 7, 21 and 28 (3 sessions).

Ribbit!

We will set off downstream with the Teeny Weeny Tadpole as he meets all kinds of new friends as we read The Teeny Weeny Tadpole by Sheridan Cain. After reading the book, we’ll make frogs out of paper plates and frog headbands and puppets. May 5, 12 and 19 (3 sessions).

The Parent and Child curriculum is written and taught by Jenna Leverknight, the preschool teacher for The Learning Lamp’s part-day preschool program in Richland.
