Piggy Bank Fundraiser For After School Program Underway

Posted on February 8, 2017

Johnstown, PA (Feb. 8, 2017) – Hand-painted piggy banks will grace the counters of area businesses through the end of March. The adorable banks were painted by local children and will raise money for free after school programs for kids in Johnstown. People are encouraged to drop a few coins into the banks when they see them around town.

In study after study, research shows that students who participate in after school programs attend school more regularly, have more positive attitudes toward school, are more physically active and receive better grades than those who do not attend such programs. Held in the Johnstown neighborhoods of Moxham, Oakhurst and Coopersdale, The Learning Lamp’s After School Outreach Program provides free homework help, a nutritious meal and a safe, positive environment for children in grades K to 8 up to four days each week. Contributions to The Learning Lamp’s Annual Piggy Bank Campaign support the program.

“This year, we’re hoping to raise more money than ever before,” said Ingrid Kloss, The Learning Lamp’s Director of Development. “That’s why we’re encouraging people to look under every couch cushion and in every nook and cranny to find as many spare coins as possible to place inside the piggy banks. The change they find can end up changing a child’s life.”

The Learning Lamp will distribute piggy banks starting the week of February 6, 2017. Businesses, offices and other organizations can call Megan Eckenrode at 814-262-0732 extension 227 if they are interested in hosting their own piggy bank.
