Posted on April 20, 2015

Johnstown, PA (April 20, 2015) – Everyone’s favorite ogre will take center stage in the hilarious production of SHREK, Jr. The Musical at the 7th Annual Summer Performing Arts Academy. A joint effort of The Learning Lamp and Richland Performing Arts Center, the two-week summer program is for youth from any school entering grades 6 through 12 and will be held at Richland High School June 15 through June 27, 2015, with two public performances on June 26 and 27.

Campers will also take part in workshops in acting, character development, singing, stage presence and dance. Instruction in costume, make-up and basics of theatre are also included. Best of all, the academy provides young actors and actresses the opportunity to present a powerhouse musical in a premier theater setting.

“I see the Summer Performing Arts Academy as a place where young people, passionate about theatre, get together, meet new friends, work as a team, and see a production happen in a very short time,” said Kim Rauch, director, Summer Performing Arts Academy. “Yes, it is hard work, but those two weeks are mixed with a lot of fun, and kids get the satisfaction of a job well done at the end.”

DreamWorks’ SHREK, Jr. The Musical is set in a faraway kingdom where the green ogre Shrek finds his swamp invaded by banished fairytale misfits, runaways who’ve been cast off by Lord Farquaad, a tiny terror with big ambitions. When Shrek sets off with a wise-cracking donkey to confront Farquaad, he’s handed a task—if he rescues feisty Princess Fiona from the Dragon-guarded tower, his swamp will be returned to him. But, a fairy tale wouldn’t be complete without unexpected twists and turns along the way.

Hours for the 7th Annual Summer Performing Arts Academy are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, excluding performances. Early registration is underway, although space is limited. Tuition is $270 and includes all theater classes, show rehearsals, scripts and costumes, a t-shirt and two tickets to the show. Students should bring a lunch. Tuition must be paid two weeks prior to the start of the program. Income-eligible families may qualify for tuition assistance.
